Windows Messenger and Office Communicator Port Usage

Microsoft has updated the article "Description of the Windows Messenger client basic protocol port usage for instant messaging, file transfer, audio, and video" which also applies to Office Communicator (At least on Legacy Windows versions a.k.a. XP and 2000 ;-)

If you are looking at firewall configuration the post LCS, Audio/video, file transfers and firewalls may also be worth a read, and if you are looking at Network capacity planning then look at the post Interested in Network Bandwidth Usage of Audio/Video in Office Communicator !?.

I am wondering if you know how to disable communicator from going to away mode. I am sick of it going to away mode every time i lock the system.

Actually it's by behaviour by design - you are away when you computer is locked, so why not reflect that?

You might not actually want your boss to know you're not doing anything when 'working from home' tho... All other IM clients (Sametime/Jabber/Kopete/Yahoo etc etc) allow you to turn off auto away, so why not Office Communicator?

Actually, Miranda is an awesome IM Client that has a SIP plugin which will support the Protocol used by Communicator. Miranda has all the good things you'd expect like configurable away settings and user level online/offline visibility, so you can be 'online' all day to your boss and completely invisible to that project manager whos incessant IMing stops you from working.

To Dennis: Actually it's bad behavior by design - If I'm in a meeting (on my Outlook/Exchange calendar) it should show 'busy' or 'in a meeting', not 'away', just because I (for security) locked my computer before heading to the conference room.

I agree this is a poor design and there must be some way to get around it!

I agree this is a poor design. I'm find with it requiring an away message, but let me choose what it is. Always putting away isn't necessarily true. There must be some way around this.

Another "Away" related question - I have setup defined groupings of people. When an individual is "away" - they drop out from the particular sub-group and into the general "away" category group (a default group). is there any way to circumvent this? that is, their "away" status and name remain in the group i have defined them to be in - regardless of their present status.
